Abstract: Manuel Rodrigues Coelho nacque a Elvas, nel Portogallo orientale, intorno al 1555 e morì a Lisbona nel 1635. Durante la sua vita ricoprì incarichi come organista nella sua città natale e a Badajoz (Spagna); in seguito fu nominato organista della Cappella Reale a Lisbona. Flores de musica, la sua unica opera conosciuta, fu stampata a Lisbona nel 1620 da Pedro Craesbeeck. - L'edizione originale di Flores de música è un volume con 235 fogli di musica stampati in partitura. Tutti i brani musicali utilizzano un sistema di quattro righi, ad eccezione dei cosiddetti Versos para se cantarem ao orgão (Versi da cantare all'organo), che utilizzano cinque righi (quattro per l'organo e uno per la linea da cantare). Il testo musicale è preceduto da una sezione introduttiva di dodici pagine che comprende la dedica di Coelho al re, la licenza di stampa, il parere tecnico dell'eminente polifonista Frei Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650), cinque poesie (di autori diversi) in lode di Coelho e della sua musica, e un Prologo e Advertencias particulares del compositore. Abstract: I pochi dati biografici disponibili ci dicono che Francisco Correa de Arauxo (o de Acevedo) nacque a Siviglia e fu battezzato probabilmente nel settembre del 1584. Fu nominato organista a El Salvador, la seconda chiesa di Siviglia, nel 1599, e ordinato sacerdote probabilmente nel 1608. Dopo diversi tentativi infruttuosi di diventare organista della Cattedrale, egli accettò l’incarico di primo organista presso la Cattedrale di Segovia, dove rimase fino alla morte, nonostante gli inviti insistenti del Capitolato di Siviglia a ritornare nella sua città per ricoprire il ruolo tanto agognato. È sepolto nella Cattedrale di Segovia. Come per J.S. Bach, la figura di Correa è quella di un artista a cavallo tra due epoche, fra tradizione e innovazione. Dobbiamo riconoscere la grande bellezza e genialità della sua musica, che lo distingue da tutti gli altri compositori spagnoli dell’epoca, allo stesso modo di Frescobaldi in Italia, Grigny in Francia e Bach in Germania. La Facultad Organica fu pubblicata nel 1626. La presente edizione Urtext, a cura di Guy Bovet, si basa sulla copia conservata alla Bibliothèque Royale di Bruxelles; per alcuni passaggi dubbi si sono consultate le due copie della Biblioteca Nacional di Madrid. Abstract: La Practical Harmony è una monumentale antologia in quattro volumi nella quale sono raccolte quasi duecento composizioni di autori italiani, tedeschi, inglesi ed austriaci scelte da Clementi nella duplice veste di editore e – in alcuni casi – arrangiatore. Colpisce la doppia e conclamata destinazione per organo e pianoforte, fatto non nuovo ma neanche così frequente, tanto più trattandosi di una scelta di composizioni per lo più afferenti al cosiddetto “stile osservato”. Il nome dei due strumenti trova spazio nell’ambito della stessa riga ed è stampato nel medesimo carattere tipografico. Se a ciò poi si aggiunge che un congruo numero di brani è tratto dal repertorio più propriamente clavicembalistico, l’antologia acquisisce quello che potremmo definire un peculiare e ancor più interessante ‘eclettismo tastieristico’.

Abstract: The organ sonatas of William Thomas Best and William Spark are the earliest examples of English organ sonatas and mark the advent of a tradition that continues with little interruption until the mid-twentieth century. Although the exact dates of composition are unknown it seems likely that Spark’s Sonata was written in 1858 and Best’s Sonata in 1862. The date of the Spark is more certain because the cover of the first edition states that it was performed at a music festival in Leeds Town Hall in September, 1858. However, it is also possible that both were written earlier. The cover of the Best refers to him working at Wallasey Parish Church where he was appointed in 1860. However, that does not preclude the possibility that he wrote it some years before and published it later. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn’s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa.

Abstract: The two organ sonatas of Frederick Arthur Gore Ouseley (1825-1889) have not been readily available in print since their initial publication in the late nineteenth century. Aside from the importance of Ouseley in the music world of nineteenth-century Britain, most especially in his work towards the furtherance of church music, the sonatas represent a critical moment in the transition of the English organ sonata tradition that began between 1858 and 1862 with the sonatas written by the concert organists W. T. Best and William Spark. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn’s very practical and popular approach to the instrument but also the continuing European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa.

Abstract: In a few decades José de Nebra, previously almost completely unknown to musicians and amateurs - outside a narrow circle of connoisseurs -, has become one of the most appreciated Spanish composers in history. Famous and renowned during his lifetime, his music has been forgotten - except for one composition - for more than two centuries, but the publication of a certain number of editions of his music, especially theatrical and religious, since the 1990s has contributed to giving him back a preeminent role in the history of Spanish music and to providing him with a certain presence in concert programs and recordings. As for Nebra’s keyboard music, which from the start was to be his main occupation, we have a sad panorama of scattered, late sources, and often of doubtful - if not erroneous - attribution, until the appearance and subsequent study of the manuscript to which the present edition is dedicated. This notebook was discovered in the Music Archive of the Cathedrals of Zaragoza. The content of the manuscript consists of a set of thirty-one pieces grouped in eight large works in several movements, which often depart somewhat from the Scarlattian sonata model so common in eighteenth-century Iberian keyboard music and which link with other traditions of keyboard music: the purely Hispanic (in some examples of great intentos or fugues, imitative compositions derived from the ancient tientos) and also other European traditions, such as the French, detectable in numerous dance movements. Nebra gives the name ‘sinfonía’ to two of these large-scale compositions in several movements, so that in this edition, respecting the name given by the author, the editor used such a name for the series of eight pieces, which could probably also have been called suites, ordres or even sonatas.
